Wedding Photographer Dandenong Ranges

Towering forests, fern gullies, European gardens. The Dandenongs create a wedding backdrop unlike anywhere else near Melbourne.

Ancient Forest, Manicured Gardens, Dappled Light

The Dandenong Ranges rise from Melbourne's eastern suburbs into a landscape that feels entirely separate from the city below. As a specialist Melbourne wedding photography team, we have been shooting in these mountains for over a decade. Mountain ash trees tower forty metres overhead, their canopy filtering sunlight into soft, dappled patterns that move across ceremony spaces throughout the day. Beneath them, fern gullies create a green, enclosed atmosphere that no amount of styling could replicate. This is a region where the venue's natural surroundings do most of the visual work.

We have photographed weddings at the Dandenongs' most established venues over many years. Tatra Receptions in Mount Dandenong has been hosting weddings for decades, and its terraced gardens backed by towering forest still produce some of the most striking ceremony images we deliver. The light filters through the canopy differently depending on the season, and knowing how to work with that shifting quality is something we have learned from repeated visits, not a single walkthrough.

Lyrebird Falls in Kalorama is another venue we know intimately. The ceremony space beside the waterfall creates a natural soundscape that adds atmosphere to the day, and the surrounding bush provides countless portrait locations within a short walk. Poets Lane, also in Kalorama, takes a different approach with its contemporary architecture set against the forest. The contrast between clean modern lines and ancient trees is visually arresting, and the covered spaces offer reliable wet-weather options, which matters in a region where rainfall can arrive without much warning.

Nathania Springs in Monbulk has a more traditional garden feel, with manicured lawns, established deciduous trees, and stone pathways that wind through the property. It photographs beautifully in autumn when the European plantings turn copper and gold against the evergreen bush behind them. The National Rhododendron Gardens in Olinda offer a public but spectacular setting during the flowering months, with colour and depth that private venues rarely match.

For couple portraits, we often incorporate stops at Alfred Nicholas Gardens, where the ornamental lake reflects the surrounding forest, or the William Ricketts Sanctuary with its mossy sculptures set into the hillside among tree ferns. Both locations are short drives from most Dandenong Ranges reception venues and add variety to the gallery without eating into the timeline.

Mountain weather is the one variable every Dandenongs couple should plan for. The ranges sit several hundred metres above Melbourne and temperatures run cooler, with mist and light rain common even in summer. We carry weather-sealed gear as standard and know the covered areas at every major venue. When the mist rolls in, it actually creates some of our most atmospheric work.
