We have shot parties at venues across the city grid. Siglo on Spring Street is one of Melbourne's most elegant rooftop bars, with views directly across to Parliament House and the Treasury Gardens. It is a favourite for milestone birthdays and engagement celebrations where the setting needs to match the occasion. Rooftop Bar on Swanston Street is a completely different vibe, more relaxed and open-air, and it works brilliantly for casual birthday gatherings and after-work celebrations during the warmer months.
The laneway bars are where Melbourne's personality really shines, and they are some of our favourite venues to photograph in. Eau de Vie, hidden behind an unmarked door on Malthouse Lane, has a moody, intimate atmosphere that produces stunning candid photography. The Croft Institute, styled like an old science laboratory, gives you a backdrop you genuinely cannot get anywhere else. Section 8 in Tattersalls Lane is a stripped-back open-air bar made from shipping containers, and its raw, industrial look creates fantastic contrast in photos. Her bar on Little Collins Street draws a stylish crowd and its low-lit, sophisticated interior works well for cocktail-style events.
Navigating the CBD's party venues is second nature to us. We know which laneways to cut through, where parking works after hours, and how to find the entrances to venues that seem deliberately hidden. More importantly, we know the lighting conditions inside these spaces. Most laneway bars and basement venues are dark. Really dark. Neon signs, candles, string lights, and not much else. That is part of their charm, but it is a nightmare for photographers who are not prepared for it.
