Having shot hundreds of events across Melbourne, we've developed strong opinions about which venues deliver great results and which ones need careful planning. Here's our perspective on the best event venues, grouped by event type.
Corporate Event Venues
Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre (MCEC)
The MCEC is Melbourne's largest purpose-built event space. The main exhibition halls offer vast spaces with high ceilings and flexible lighting rigs that photograph well when properly lit. The challenge is scale: a photographer needs strategic positioning to avoid images that make a well-attended event look sparse. The Yarra River frontage provides an excellent outdoor option for portraits.
Best photo spots: The river terrace for natural light portraits, the main foyer for architectural framing, and the plenary for wide keynote shots.
Crown Melbourne
Crown's function spaces, particularly the Palladium and the Crown Conference Centre, are designed for high-end corporate events and deliver accordingly. The Palladium ballroom, with its high ceilings and chandeliers, produces elegant images that require minimal editing. The interior lighting tends warm, which a professional photographer will adjust for.
Best photo spots: The Palladium foyer for arrival shots, the balcony overlooking the Yarra for outdoor portraits.
Grand Hyatt Melbourne
The Grand Hyatt's ballroom and function spaces on Collins Street offer a classic, refined setting. The lighting is consistently good, and the spaces are well proportioned, meaning events photograph as busy and engaged without needing to fill a cavernous room. The foyer also works well for headshot photography stations during corporate conferences.

Wedding Venues
Yarra Valley Estates
The Yarra Valley is arguably Melbourne's premier wedding photography destination. Venues like TarraWarra Estate, Zonzo Estate, and Stones of the Yarra Valley combine vineyard landscapes with consistently beautiful natural light. The afternoon golden hour is particularly stunning, with long shadows stretching across vine rows. Weather can change quickly, but overcast conditions often produce beautifully soft, even light.

Mornington Peninsula Properties
The Mornington Peninsula offers coastal estates, hilltop vineyards, and bushland retreats with a light quality softened by proximity to the water. Bay-side venues produce calm, refined images; ocean-side properties deliver dramatic, textured landscapes.
Best photo spots: Clifftop lookouts on the back beaches, vineyard terraces, and the sheltered bay beaches at sunset.
Dandenong Ranges Gardens
The Dandenong Ranges offer lush forest settings surrounded by mountain ash, fern gullies, and formal gardens. The rich, earthy palette works particularly well in autumn and winter. Lighting can be challenging under the dense canopy, so the best results come from shooting in open clearings.

Party Venues
St Kilda and Foreshore Venues
The St Kilda foreshore is one of Melbourne's most versatile party photography locations. The pier, the beach, the palm-lined Esplanade, and the vibrant street art all provide diverse backdrops within walking distance. Foreshore function venues benefit from natural light during the day and dramatic sunset views in the evening.

CBD Rooftop Bars
Melbourne's rooftop bars offer dramatic city skyline views and creative interior design. Lighting is excellent during golden hour but can become challenging after dark, as mood lighting requires careful camera settings. Wind and changeable weather mean a wet-weather backup plan is essential.
Best photo spots: Any position with the city skyline as a backdrop, particularly during the blue hour (20 to 30 minutes after sunset).
South Yarra Function Spaces
South Yarra offers a mix of heritage and contemporary function spaces. Como House and Garden is a standout for its manicured grounds and historic architecture. More contemporary spaces along Chapel Street and Toorak Road offer industrial-chic aesthetics with exposed brick, high ceilings, and large windows that let in generous natural light.

Conference Venues
MCEC Conference Spaces
For large-scale conferences, the MCEC remains the standard. The purpose-built plenary, multiple breakout rooms, and exhibition space allow photographers to capture the full scope of a multi-day conference. The technical lighting in the plenary is professional-grade and produces excellent stage photography.
Melbourne Town Hall
The Melbourne Town Hall is a heritage venue with stunning interior architecture. The main hall features ornate detailing, a pipe organ, and soaring ceilings that create dramatic, grand images. For conferences that want to project prestige and tradition, this venue delivers visually. The lighting is more challenging than modern purpose-built spaces, but the architectural details more than compensate.
Best photo spots: The main hall stage with the pipe organ as a backdrop, the portico entrance, and the upper-level galleries for crowd shots.
Choosing a Venue with Photography in Mind
When selecting a venue, consider asking for photographs from previous events held in the space. This gives you a realistic sense of how the venue photographs rather than relying on marketing images that may have been shot under controlled conditions.
Natural light is your friend. Venues with large windows, outdoor access, or both will almost always produce more flattering photographs than windowless ballrooms. If your event runs into the evening, ask about the quality and colour of the artificial lighting. This is especially important for product launch photography, where the lighting needs to showcase both the product and the atmosphere.
